Games that make a difference at Borås Tech Challenge 2026

What happens when creativity, a love of games and a drive to make a difference come together during an intense hackathon? At Borås Tech Challenge 2026, participants explored how games can have a real impact – and among many strong entries, several teams have now been recognised as winners within the theme Games that Matter.

After 24 hours filled with ideas, coding, design and teamwork, the jury has selected this year’s winners. Working in teams, participants created games that not only entertain, but also spark reflection, build understanding and contribute to positive change.

Games with purpose

This year’s theme, Games that Matter, challenged participants to think beyond traditional gameplay. How can games be used to highlight societal issues, inspire engagement or help us see the world from a new perspective? The result was an impressive range of entries – from serious games with clear messages to playful experiences that still resonate on a deeper level. What they all share is a desire to use games as a tool for something greater.

“It’s fantastic to see how the teams have used games to tackle important issues in creative and unexpected ways. This year’s entries really show that games can be both engaging and meaningful,” says Madeleine Sääf, Chair of the Jury for Borås Tech Challenge and Business Developer at Borås INK.

A hackathon that builds connections

Borås Tech Challenge was held for the fourth consecutive year. On 7–8 May, 180 professionals, students and upper secondary school pupils gathered at the University of Borås to create innovation with real societal value. The hackathon is organised by Tech Borås, with support from 25 partner organisations.

“By bringing together industry, students and young talent in the same space, we create a meeting place that is important for the entire tech ecosystem in Borås. It’s not just about the competition – it’s about building relationships, inspiration and future collaborations,” says Alen Doracic, Deputy Head of Department at the Department of Information Technology at the University of Borås.
