Students recognised for Best Thesis in Tech

A new award aimed at strengthening the connection between academia and industry has been established – and the very first winners have now been announced. The Best Thesis in Tech award is presented by Tech Borås in collaboration with local companies and the Department of Information Technology at the University of Borås.

The purpose of the award is to highlight student innovation and collaboration with industry, helping to build stronger links between academia and the professional world. The prize includes a scholarship of SEK 15,000, as well as the opportunity to present the work at the annual thesis networking event and at the department’s graduation ceremony in June.

Focusing on language review in public authorities

This year’s winners are Hugo Carlsén and Linus Olsson, who graduated this spring from the Business Analytics programme at the University of Borås. Their work focuses on language review within public authorities. The jury stated:

“The thesis ‘Large Language Models for Language Review in Public Authorities’ is a shining example of how theory and practice can be combined in a way that truly makes a difference. The authors have tackled a technically complex area with impressive clarity and structure, making the subject both accessible and engaging. The topic is also highly relevant: large language models (LLMs) are set to transform the way organisations work, and this thesis shows the way forward.

What further strengthens the work is the close collaboration with an organisation throughout the process. This demonstrates both courage and the ability to apply knowledge in real-world contexts. As a final achievement, the thesis has resulted in an innovative artefact, developed iteratively with great creativity and technical skill.”

Building bridges between academia and industry

“It’s fantastic to be able to recognise students’ achievements in this way. A thesis is often the culmination of several years of study, and when it is rooted in real-world challenges, it not only adds relevance but also creates a natural bridge into working life,” says Alen Doracic, Deputy Head of Department at the Department of Information Technology.

The award is led by Tech Borås – a collaborative platform where companies, academia and organisations in the Borås region come together to drive development in technology, digitalisation and innovation. An annual award recognising new talent

The Tech Borås thesis award will be presented annually and is open to students at the Department of Information Technology who have completed a thesis during the year. Winning entries should demonstrate a strong understanding of current tech-related challenges and be carried out in collaboration with one or more tech companies. The results should include innovative elements with the potential to develop into future products, processes or business models.

“We see great value in highlighting young talent who bring fresh perspectives and solutions within tech. It is exactly this type of innovation that strengthens our region and the future labour market,” says Göran Lobell, Chair of the Jury.
