Tech Borås and IT-girls continue to inspire young women towards a future in tech

Following last year’s success, Upptech is back – with even more inspiring conversations, networking and practical advice for a future in tech. On 12 November, Tech Borås and IT-girls once again brought together upper secondary school girls and female university students, helping to build confidence in a future within the tech industry.

As before, Upptech aims to show that the tech sector has room for more perspectives, while also creating opportunities for young women in IT to connect. During the event, participants met female role models who shared their experiences and challenges, as well as offering practical tips for building a career in tech.

A strong drive to build community

“The industry is still male-dominated, and we want to create a sense of belonging and show clear pathways for young women who are curious about tech,” say Besarta Jonuzi, Johanna Gull and Caroline Swanpalmer from IT-girls. “By bringing together upper secondary school students and university students, we create networks that can make a real difference – both now and in the future.”

Curiosity about the tech industry

This year’s Upptech event attracted a diverse and curious audience. Upper secondary school pupils, university students and others interested in tech took the opportunity to ask questions during a panel discussion with three speakers from Centiro, NetOnNet and Devster. The questions reflected both a strong curiosity about the industry and a need to discuss technology with like-minded people.

“Initiatives like this are important for promoting equality and creating better opportunities for women in tech. It’s about showing that IT is not only about coding, but also about creative problem-solving, innovation and building solutions that shape the future of society. IT is about understanding people and organisations, simplifying everyday life and creating opportunities that didn’t exist before,” says Alen Doracic, Deputy Head of Department at the Department of Information Technology at the University of Borås.

Initiatives that make a difference

Interest in IT and tech among women is also on the rise, something that is reflected in this year’s admission figures at the University of Borås.

“In recent years, we’ve actively worked to reach out to young women and highlight the wide range of opportunities within IT and tech. My hope is that initiatives like this plant small seeds of interest that, over time, can lead to meaningful change at a societal level,” says Alen Doracic.
