About innovation sprint #1

Data protection and increased legal requirements for the use of digital technologies are often seen as a challenge for e-retailers. What if customers’ personal data could be used to create successful and frictionless online shopping experiences, without compromising privacy? And what if online consumers could also increase control over the information they share? Five e-commerce companies, four regional tech companies and five researchers from the University of Borås collaborated for six intensive weeks to create and evaluate a common concept.

Cipers

Our Approach

The solution was "Cipers"

A digital service, ‘Cipers’, combines privacy and advanced data analytics to tailor e-commerce shopping experiences. For consumers, Cipers provide a secure way to share their personal information and from there receive personalised shopping experiences. For e-commerce companies, Cipers offers a cloud service that supports personalisation of offers, increasing purchase interest and reducing the risk of returns. At the same time, it provides valuable insights from online consumers’ data, without compromising their privacy.

Reflections

The results show that it is not just about regulating personal data, but also carefully using it to improve the future of e-commerce. Value is increasingly created through a two-way exchange of data between consumer and e-retailer.

The development of Cipers created the conditions for research into personal data management systems. The increased use of such systems has the potential to fundamentally affect e-commerce and e-commerce digital systems. The results also formed the basis for the digital innovation course given to system scientists at the University of Borås.
